Marketing Industry News Round-Up: June 2021

With the end of June comes our monthly news round-up of all the great things that happened in the marketing world over the past month.

If you’re in the marketing industry, this can be a great way to catch up on any stories you may have missed and if you’re a client it can be helpful to know what’s possible on various platforms so you can ask us about other services not currently covered on your retainer!

Either way, knowledge is power, so read on to find out what went on in June 2021:

Tools & Features We’re Excited About

Visual Insights Tool

With 3.2 billion photos being uploaded on social media every day, we might miss out on a lot of interesting data if we can’t easily process those images. Alt descriptions give us some idea of what’s in an image, but these short explanations often miss a lot.

What if you could track images that your brand logo was used in, the same way that you could track brand mentions and sentiment in text-based posts? A new tool called Visual Insights by You Scan analyses images for logos, demographic data (age group, gender), activity, surrounding objects, setting, and many more.

Marketing Takeaway: This can be helpful for refining your buyer personas as it gives you a clear visual of who your buyer is and other objects or brands they surround themselves with. It may also help your business to identify good influencers or ambassadors for your brand.

Reels Ads

Yet another place to run ads on social media! Instagram is adding ads to the reels feed. They’ll appear between individual videos and take up the full screen in the 9:16 aspect ratio.

Marketing Takeaway: If you’re running ads and use video in them, this opens up another option for you to reach new audiences.  With Instagram pushing reels and video content over its original square photo feed, getting in on this early will give you an advantage before over-saturation.

Campaigns We Loved

HBO Max Email Mistake

This isn’t a campaign per se, but we’re counting it! A blank test email was accidentally sent out to a bunch of HBO Max subscribers. And while HBO ‘blamed the intern’ they also said they were helping them learn how it happened and how to move forward. It also prompted a lot of discussion on social media about mistakes other interns have made and how they weren’t as world-ending as it felt at the time. All in all, a wholesome exchange.

Marketing Takeaway: Humanity and empathy are really important in marketing, especially when dealing with mistakes. We cover a lot of this and its importance in our community management series and QuickBuzz video.

Zoom & F1 Brand Partnership

Sometimes things are just a match made in heaven. We’re not sure if this was intentional or not, but this partnership between Zoom and F1 racing is perfection. It even spawned a few good memes that were joking about it.

Marketing Takeaway: Okay, there really isn’t one, but we hope it made you smile.
